In a modern reading
An ending, a closure or a period of stagnation. Modern readers rarely read it as literal death; it marks something that has run its course. [13][14][11]
Text on the 19th-century card
Very near the person it unfailingly means serious illness, death or total loss of fortune. Further from the person this card is less dangerous.
As a house in the Grand Tableau
Position 8 of the Grand Tableau is the House of the Coffin. A card that falls here is read in the context of ending, closure, illness.[15][16]
